About
the Saddle Maker
placeholder
Troy spent many years using saddles before
he ever started making them.
placeholder
About 1980 Troy started out working on big cow outfits like his
father and grandfathers before him. Most
kids his age were still in high school.
These outfits had big cavvies of horses,
some still pulled the wagon out. Trailer
rides and fences weren't quite as common as
they are now. During these buckaroo years
he rode a large variety of horses, several
saddles and worked with a lot of different
cowboys from different parts of the country.
In about 1991, with a wife and two kids to
support, he started shoeing, day-working,
starting colts and trading some horses. By
1995 he was trading quite a few horses;
anything that was salvageable got rode for
awhile and sold.

The large block of time in Troy's life spent
horseback gives him an insight into how a
saddle should sit a horse and fit a cowboy.
There are a lot of really fine saddle
makers that Troy admires for their finish
work and their craftsmanship, but it is
pretty easy to see the difference between
the folks that learned their craft in a
classroom and the people that have spent the
large end of their life in a saddle.
placeholder
Troy is very concerned with the quality of
anything that comes out of the shop. If
something doesn't turn out just the way he
intended - he starts over. He doesn't send
anything out of the shop that he wouldn't
want to ride or use himself. For the same
reason he guarantees his saddles and other
trappings to the customer’s satisfaction.

Since opening up the shop here, a few people have wondered "why in
Dayville and not somewhere in the heart of
the Great Basin?" Troy spent the majority
of his life in Northern Nevada, and wife,
Jan is a Nevada native.

"The things that we were looking for, for
our family, we found when we came and looked
at this place. Beautiful, diversified
country with abundant wildlife and fishing
opportunities, nice mild winters with very
little wind, and a small country school for
our three kids."

Thought some of you might enjoy a few
pictures that I was able to find.
